The Fuel Consumption Calculator is a tool designed to help ship owners estimate methanol and pilot fuel consumption for two-stroke main engines used on vessels. The consumption values at various engine loads are based on standard data provided by propulsion Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Please note that tolerances are not included, so some variation should be expected.
Important considerations
- Load profile accuracy: The closer your engine load profile reflects actual operations, the more precise the estimated fuel consumption.
- Fuel mode: Engines operating below a 10% load will switch to Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) /Ultra Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (ULSFO) mode.
- Pilot fuel: A constant 5% pilot fuel (based on energy at 100% load) is required to facilitate methanol ignition and combustion.
Calculations
Calculations are based on Lower Calorific Values (LCV):
- Methanol: 19,900 kJ/kg
- VLSFO / ULSFO: 41,000 kJ/kg
This calculator is intended for individual ships and engines, based on specific operational data. If you want to observe load patterns across fleets, you can look at the Fourth Greenhouse Gas Study 2020 by the International Maritime Organization.
