The IMO Research and Development (R&D) Forum brought together international experts and stakeholders to strengthen global preparedness for pollution incidents involving alternative marine fuels.
The event addressed research and capability gaps in spill response involving fuels such as methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and bio/e-fuels. Held during the same week as World Maritime Day 2026 and in collaboration with the SpillAsia Conference, the event aimed to advance science-based response strategies and support the safe transition to lower-emission shipping.
MI China Chief Representative Kai Zhao participated at the event, and spoke about methanol’s behaviour in the marine environment and the experience the industry can already draw on as its use as a marine fuel grows.
