MI – The Global Methanol Alliance and Green Marine have signed a collaboration agreement to strengthen maritime methanol training, develop practical technical guidance, and support safe operations as the global fleet of methanol-capable vessels continues to expand.

More than 150 methanol-capable vessels are already operating worldwide, with over 290 on order and bunkering infrastructure expanding across major ports. As more vessels enter service, the focus is increasingly shifting to the practical requirements of operating safely, from crew training and fuel handling to bunkering procedures and emergency preparedness.

The partnership brings together MI’s global industry network, policy expertise and market knowledge with Green Marine’s hands-on experience in maritime engineering, operations and training. The aim is to bring industry knowledge and practical maritime experience together to support the people and organisations putting methanol to work at sea and in ports.

Under the agreement, MI and Green Marine will initially focus on three areas:

• Maritime methanol training: MI will act as a knowledge partner, bringing industry expertise and member insights to complement Green Marine’s practical training programme and support the development of skills needed for safe methanol operations.

• Joint policy papers: The organisations will co-author papers combining MI’s policy expertise with Green Marine’s operational experience to inform policy discussions and help shape the conditions for wider methanol adoption in shipping.

• Technical guidance: The organisations will develop technical bulletins drawing on real-world operational experience to help shipowners, ports, and fuel suppliers navigate the practical aspects of using methanol as a marine fuel.

Alexander Döll, CEO of MI – The Global Methanol Alliance, said: “As methanol’s use in shipping grows, safe and reliable operations will be essential to its long-term success. Our members are investing in production, supply, and bunkering infrastructure, but those investments also depend on customers having the confidence to use methanol. And that confidence starts with people – crews and teams who have the right skills, training, and practical knowledge. By combining MI’s global industry reach with Green Marine’s hands-on expertise, we can share valuable experience across the sector, give companies greater confidence as they adopt methanol, and support its wider growth in shipping.’’

Fredrik Stubner, Founder & Group CEO, Green Marine, said: ‘’Ships are one part of the picture. The people operating them safely is the other. Green Marine was established to close that gap, from engineering support before delivery to training and operational guidance once the vessel is running. Working with MI means we can reach further and make sure the right knowledge gets to the right people as methanol spreads across the global fleet.’’
